Cancelling your number plate: it’s no longer done through bpost!

Starting from 1 August 2025, the cancellation of vehicle number plates will no longer be handled by bpost, but directly by the DIV (Direction for Vehicle Registration).

Two options are available:

  1. By post

Send your rear number plate (the one with the DIV logo) to the following address:

DIV – 1212 Brussels

You may fold (but not cut) the plate to fit it into an A4 envelope, as long as it is properly packaged and sufficiently stamped.

  1. In person

You can drop off your number plate unwrapped in one of the special collection boxes at the FPS Mobility building,
Rue du Progrès 56, 1210 Brussels.

There are two drop-off options:

  • In the main entrance hall (open on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.)
  • At the DIV counter (opening hours available on the FPS website)

The cancellation date depends on the method used:

  • By post: the date of cancellation is the day the envelope is opened by the DIV.
  • In person: the date of cancellation is the day you drop off the plate.

No need to cancel your plate if you’re buying a new vehicle soon. If you purchase a new vehicle of the same category within four months, there’s no need to cancel your existing number plate.
This saves you both time and administrative fees and helps reduce waste.
